Yeoju International Photo Festival — A New Landscape of Photography, Beginning by the Riverside

The Yeoju International Photo Festival (YIPF) is a photography and cultural arts festival that explores the relationship between nature and humanity, life and time, while expanding the everyday landscapes and stories of the local community into the language of international photographic art.

Founded in 2023 under the theme “Earth, Environment, Humanity,” YIPF has posed new questions each year through the themes “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” in 2024 and “Precious Everyday Memories” in 2025.

In 2025, approximately 250 photographers from Korea and abroad submitted more than 1,200 works through the festival’s international open call. Approximately 200 works by around 100 Korean and 80 international photographers were selected and presented in a large-scale outdoor exhibition along the Namhan River in Yeoju.

One of the defining characteristics of YIPF is that it does not confine photography within the walls of a museum or gallery.

The water and wind of the Namhan River, the sky and trees, and the changing seasons become part of the exhibition itself. Rather than encountering photographs in a conventional gallery setting, visitors walk along the riverside, encountering images while moving between photography and nature and experiencing the works through their own perspectives.

The 2025 festival was installed along the river facing the historic Silleuksa Temple, where specially constructed exhibition structures presented numerous photographic works within the landscape. The works came together to form a larger visual landscape, creating an exhibition experience in which photography and nature became inseparable.

This approach is deeply connected to the character and identity of Yeoju.

Centered around the Namhan River, Yeoju is a city where a long history and rich cultural heritage coexist with rural and urban landscapes. YIPF does not simply use these local characteristics as a backdrop for an exhibition. Instead, it seeks to become a cultural platform through which people can rediscover and experience the region through photography.

In 2024, more than 80 photographers from Korea and abroad presented approximately 160 works on the lawn in front of the Geumeunmorae Small Art Museum, providing citizens and visitors with an opportunity to encounter contemporary photography in an open and accessible environment.

Another important value pursued by YIPF is connecting the local community with the international photography world.

Through an international Open Call that brings together photographers from Korea and around the world, YIPF introduces diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives while expanding an exhibition that begins in Yeoju into a platform for international exchange in photographic art. In 2025, approximately 250 photographers participated in the international open call, demonstrating the festival’s growing international potential. These activities are not limited to Yeoju. They have also developed into exchanges with other regions.

In late 2025, “Dialogue of Earth,” curated by the Yeoju International Photo Festival Organizing Committee, was presented at the Gyeonggi Creative Campus. In 2026, the project continued as “Dialogue of Earth 3” at Space Yishin in Busan. Bringing together the perspectives of different photographers, the project creates a dialogue around nature and the earth. It approaches the earth not simply as a landscape to be observed or photographed, but as a fundamental place where human life, memory, and thought intersect.

YIPF does not seek merely to bring a large-scale international event into a local community.

Rather, it seeks to **begin in Yeoju, encounter the photography of the world, and then bring those perspectives back to the local community**. Through photography, YIPF encourages people to rediscover Yeoju’s nature, people, and everyday life, while simultaneously sharing with local citizens the diverse perspectives of photographers from around the world on humanity, society, and nature.

While the 2025 festival, **“Precious Everyday Memories,”** expanded ordinary moments of daily life into stories of memory and community, **“Dialogue of Earth”** takes this perspective further, questioning the relationship between nature and humanity, time and space.

Ultimately, what YIPF seeks to create is not simply a photography exhibition.

It seeks to create a space where people encounter photography within the landscape of the Namhan River, rediscover their own lives and communities through photographic images, and establish new cultural connections extending from the local to the global.

This is the vision of the Yeoju International Photo Festival. The river flows, and landscapes change. Human lives, too, are constantly changing.

Photography captures moments within this continuous flow of change. Yet YIPF does not allow those moments to remain merely as fixed images.

Instead, it creates moments in which photography and place, artists and audiences, the local and the global can encounter one another and enter into dialogue.

Yeoju International Photo Festival dreams that a single photograph, beginning along the Namhan River, can flow outward and become a cultural river connecting Yeoju with the world.
